Getting Started With Backup and Disaster Recovery

How to Install Backup Agent

GETTING STARTED WITH BACKUP

To get started with this service, an agent needs to be installed on all relevant hosts that need to be backed up. For us to put together the installation materials for you to install this agent, we need to gather some information about the devices in your environment.

Step 1: Please fill out the Backup and Disaster Recovery Questionnaire

Step 2: After we receive this form, we will put together the Backup installation materials and send them to you within 48 HOURS.

Now you are ready to install the agents. We have a list of instructional materials on how to install the agents on your hosts, whether you want to do it manually on each host or through another Alternate Installation Method

INSTALLING THE BACKUP AGENT MANUALLY

 Option 1: Manual Install: Windows

Step 1: Downloaded the files onto the host

Step 2: Ensure you have administrative rights in order to install the agent to the host and complete the next steps

Step 3: Part of your deployment materials will be a text file with the required command to execute to install the agents. The command must be executed from the same folder where the installation application resides. Here’s how to do this:

Step 4: Copy the command from the text file

Step 5: Open a command prompt

Step 6: Since the command must be executed from the same folder where the installation application resides, you need to go to the correct folder in the command line. For example, if the files are on Drive C in folder “temp”, you would type “cd /d c:\temp” to get to that folder.

Step 7: Now that you have entered that folder you would paste the command in and execute it.

Step 8: It may ask you if you will allow it to make changes to your computer. Click “yes” if you see this. This will start the process, and the agent setup screen will appear.

Step 9: Click Install.

Step 10: It will extract and install the package, which might take a few minutes to complete.

Step 11: There will be a message showing the agents were successfully installed.

Step 12: Please report back to us validating the agents that have been installed, and on which hosts, so we can validate it on our end.

Option 2:  Manual Install: Linux

Step 1: Ensure that the machine is connected to the Internet.

Step 2: As the root user, navigate to directory with the installation file, make the file executable, and then run it. We will provide you with these commands. This is done using these two commands:

Step 3: chmod +x <installation file name>

Note that in order to register the machine, in the next command you need to run the installation file with the following parameter: --token=STRING

We will provide you with the token and the full command to enter.

Step 4: The full command: ./<installation file name> --token=STRING

If a proxy server is enabled in your network, when running the installation file, specify the server host name/IP address and port in the following format:

 --http-proxy-host=ADDRESS --http-proxy-port=PORT --http-proxy-login=LOGIN --http-proxy-password=PASSWORD.

Step 5: Select the check boxes for the agents that you want to install. The following agents are available:

  1. Agent for Linux

  1. Agent for Virtuozzo

  1. Agent for Oracle

  1. Agent for MySQL/MariaDB

Step 6: [If you registered the agent in a tenant that uses Compliance mode] Set the encryption password.

Step 7: If the UEFI Secure Boot is enabled on the machine, you are informed that you need to restart the system after the installation. When prompted for a password, use the password for the root user. If this password is not accepted, use the word "acronis" as a password. The installation generates a new key that is used for signing the kernel modules. You must enroll this new key to the Machine Owner Key (MOK) list by restarting the machine. Without enrolling the new key, your agent will not be operational. If you enable the UEFI Secure Boot after the agent is installed, you need to reinstall the agent.

Step 8: After the installation completes, do one of the following:

  • Click Restart, if you were prompted to restart the system in the previous step.

  • During the system restart, opt for MOK (Machine Owner Key) management, select Enroll MOK, and then enroll the key by using the password recommended in the previous step. Otherwise, click Exit

 Option 3: Manual Install: MAC

Step 1: Download the file we sent you onto the host.

(The file must have Full Disk Access. To do this go to Settings – Privacy and Security – Full Disk Access. Once in the Full Disk Access screen, click on Xprotect and make sure it is toggled on to allow the agent access.

Step 2: Ensure you have administrative rights on your computer in order to install the agent to the host and complete the next steps (most likely this is the case if you are using MAC as the first user is automatically an administrator).

Step 3: Part of your deployment materials will be a text file with the required command to execute to install the agents. The command must be executed from the same folder where the installation application resides. Here’s how to do this:

Step 4: Copy the command from the text file.

Step 5: Open Terminal.

Step 6: Since the command must be executed from the same folder where the installation application resides, you need to go to the correct folder in the command line. For example, if you put the install file in a folder called “Temp”, you would type “cd Temp”.

Step 7: Now that you have entered that folder that has the installation file, you paste the command in the terminal and execute it.

Step 8: This will start the process. It might ask you if you want to allow it to make changes to your computer. Click “yes”. After this the agent setup screen will appear.

Step 9: Follow the steps on the wizard setup that appears until you get to the end and install.

Step 11: There will be a message showing the agent was successfully installed. That is all you need to do.

Step 12: Please report back to us validating the agents that have been installed, and on which hosts, so we can validate it on our end.

If there are many hosts that need Backup, then it may not be practical to use manual installation. See the Alternate Installation Methods page for mass installation methods.
